Why did you choose Human Resources as a career?

I didn’t.  It chose me.  When I entered the Army, right after one year of junior college, they assigned me to be a personnel specialist, keeping track of all of the staff.  From that moment on, I was hooked.  After getting out of the Army, I finished junior college, then transferred to San Diego State University. There, I completed a degree in Business Management with an emphasis on Human Resources - which back then was called “Personnel”.

What do you enjoy the most about your current role as a consultant?

For the past five years, I have been doing Human Resources consulting work with many small San Diego companies.  I particularly enjoy the variety of companies and environments that I deal with.  By way of example, I work with two biotech companies, one assisted living facility, 31 KFC restaurants, an on-line radio station, and a company that advises higher education on their facilities.  The other aspect that I enjoy in my role is that I get to choose the companies and people that I work with.

When did you join San Diego HR Roundtables?

I don’t know!  I joined when it was called the Recruiters Roundtable and the focus was strictly on folks doing recruiting for their companies.  I have enjoyed how the Roundtable has evolved from the early days of Julie Magnuson to the present with Jennifer Johnson.

How do you use your San Diego HR Roundtables membership?

I attend virtually all of the Roundtable Lunch & Learns and as a result get two benefits:  One, I learn new things or hear old things that need to be reinforced AND two, I get to meet new people and see friends.
