Why did you choose Human Resources as a career?

I chose HR as a career by circumstance, frankly. Between my broadcast journalism roles, I fell into technical recruiting and I found myself managing our Applicant Tracking System and eventually it became clear that I really enjoy HR Systems and how they can help facilitate HR objectives. As a result of being on the systems side, I have also taken on the payroll function, one of the purely objective aspects of HR. There's no gray zone with the numbers, and I like that perspective.

What do you enjoy most about your current role at Piksel, Inc?

I love that I get to work closely with Jennifer Johnson, who has influenced me and helped guide my career. We balance each other out with our polar opposite skillsets, so it's a very complementary relationship. I also really enjoy being part of a company that is flexible and embraces new processes, so I get to influence and implement various systems to improve our HR department.

How do you use your SDHR Roundtable membership in your current role?

I'm able to reach out to different members for help on various work related issues to see how other employers in our community handle similar situations. It's helped me become more confident in my HR skills and knowledge. I continue my membership because of the valuable relationships I've made and the content that I'm exposed to at the lunch and learn events.

What is your role at SDHR, and what are you working on right now?

Currently, I'm the EVP, basically partnering up with Jennifer to grow and improve our member engagement. I'm excited to be working on revamping our SDHR website, to improve its functionality for our members. The new Association Management Software solution that we're using will really help our members engage as a community in various new ways. Our Job Board will be more widely advertised, so that positions that are posted on SDHR will be distributed to wider channels and give the postings greater exposure, and a wider pool of candidates and applicants. We will also be offering our list-serve much like the old days of SDHR when there was a recruiter's roundtable list serve - this will also circulate resumes within the recruiting community and has been widely requested by our members as a feature they'd like to see again. We will also be increasing our lunch and learn offerings, from both live events to web-events as well, so that members can gain access to content virtually and earn continuing education credits when they aren't able to attend live events. So lots of exciting features coming and I'm thrilled to be a part of it and growing this awesome HR community.
