Why did you choose Human Resources as a career?

When I worked at the hotel, I enjoyed hiring, training, leading, mentoring, and managing employees.  When I moved to San Diego, I accepted a position at a staffing firm to start my career in HR.  I loved recruiting because I was involved in hiring, consulting, mentoring, and managing our contract employees.  However, I wanted more variety, challenge, and to have a greater impact on the internal operations of the company as it relates to employee relations, compliance, and development. Therefore, I continued to pursue Human Resources when I accepted a position with Proven Recruiting.

When did you join SDHR Roundtable?

I joined a few years ago when I met Jennifer Johnson.  I was interested in networking with other HR professionals and was interested in some of the lunch and learn topics they were hosting.  Recently, I have been attending the bi-monthly Recruiter Roundtable events and have made some great connections and found it to be a helpful platform to share ideas on different HR needs, concerns, questions.

What do you enjoy most about working in the HR Industry?

The constant change, development, and challenge to learn and grow.  I like that I am in a profession with hot topics I can discuss when networking with other HR professionals.  It provides me more opportunity to relate to others in HR and share ideas on how to handle different situations in the workplace. For example, there’s always a new law, there’s always a new challenge at work with an employee, there’s always room for growth.

What is the best piece of career advice you have received that you would like to share?

Develop more well-rounded knowledge in all areas of business. This includes regularly reading publications such as the Wall Street Journal, trade magazines, etc.  The more you read, the more you learn, the more you can apply yourself and feel more confident in your approaches.

What do you enjoy most about your current role?

Working for Proven Recruiting, I am grateful to have the opportunity to work with a leadership team who promotes development, encourages autonomy, provides constructive feedback, and is supportive of my personal and professional growth.  I enjoy being the go-to person and consulting with employees and clients with HR related inquiries.
