Why did you choose Human Resources as a career?
I took a class in college called “Human Resources in Business” in which we did mock interviewing and I was hooked! Unfortunately, it took about five years after I graduated from college before I landed a job in HR but it was worth the wait. In the meantime I held various customer service and sales roles which confirmed my interest in HR as I loved the parts of my job that involved helping people while balancing the needs of the business.

What do you enjoy most about your current role/working at your current company?
It sounds corny and is a bit of a cliché but I love the people I work with. Since we are a health care company focused on helping patients with diabetes there is a real passion for what we do and it shows through our employees who make up our unique culture. It’s inspiring to see the creativity and dedication of our employees who work tirelessly to ensure we are able to deliver innovative therapies to improve the quality of life for patients.

When did you join SDHR Roundtable?
I have been a member since 2002 when I first moved here, and in fact it was through SDHR (previously SDRR) that I heard about the job at Neurocrine Biosciences Inc. and was later hired. I will always be grateful to the Roundtable for helping me get my start in HR here in San Diego!

How do you use your SDHR Roundtable membership in your current role?
SDHR is such a great resource for so many reasons! I have used it over the last decade to help friends and colleagues find jobs, to hire great people for my company and to network and share best practices with local HR professionals. I am excited for the future of SDHR under the leadership of Jennifer Johnson who has already made a significant impact through the addition of the educational Lunch and Learn series, monthly newsletter and networking Happy Hours. Keep up the great work!
