What is the San Diego HR Roundtable (SDHR)?

The San Diego HR Roundtable is a community of hundreds of local HR Professionals who join together to share information and network within San Diego’s business community. Our SDHR website and member communication tools are a super highway of HR information, where members exchange ideas and industry related advice in real time. SDHR is constantly looking for new ways to add value to our membership. Our Board of Directors meet regularly to develop and implement our strategy and vision. Our strategic goal is to utilize the power of our membership base to drive change in San Diego’s HR Community and create awareness in the general business community of the value of networking and information sharing and the importance of a strong HR presence in every organization.

SDHR was founded in 1998, under its original name San Diego Recruiters Roundtable (SDRR), as a vehicle for a small group of HR Professionals to share information on HR and Recruiting related topics. Today, we have grown to be one of San Diego’s largest and best known HR Networking Communities. Our membership base is targeted to a focused group that includes Human Resources Professionals, Executives and Consultants. Our members range in experience from new-to-the-industry to seasoned executives.

History of SDHR

Julie Magnuson  is the founding member of SDHR and held the position of Chairperson from its inception in 1998 to its hand-off to current President Jennifer Johnson, SPHR in June of 2012. SDHR has gone through many changes and directions over its history. After transitioning from the staffing industry to corporate HR, Magnuson and three former colleagues all found themselves with a need for mentorship and information sharing. Together they formed a monthly networking meeting in February 1998, and began to invite other folks wanting to increase their network and support system. The group, then named San Diego Recruiters Roundtable (SDRR), quickly grew to several hundred members by the year 2000. In 2001 SDRR went online, developing San Diego’s first virtual HR networking community. SDHR’s initial communication method, ListServ, was a superhighway of information, which by 2007 had grown to over 1000 members sharing ideas and information on a daily basis.

On February 12, 2008, SDRR developed its first web-based member portal and social media integration, and also formed its first Board of Directors. In 2009, Julie Magnuson was recognized for her work in SDRR by her Athena Pinnacle Award nomination in Professional Service, as well as being recognized as one of San Diego Metropolitan Magazine’s 40 Under 40. In April 2010, SDRR was recognized as a finalist in San Diego’s first #InfluenceSD awards for its use of Social Media in Business. In May 2010, SDRR officially changed its name to San Diego HR Roundtable (SDHR). Today our group uses the most current technology to connect San Diego’s HR Community. We are a close knit community dedicated to keeping each other informed on the trends in HR today, and sharing key information in real time form that help us add value as an HR Partner to the organizations we support.

SDHR Today

In June of 2012 Julie Magnuson announced that Jennifer Johnson, MBA, SPHR will assume the role of the group’s President and Chairperson of the Board. Jennifer Johnson is an HR Consultant in San Diego and brings a diverse and unique background to her role in SDHR. After more than six months of searching for the right successor, Julie Magnuson chose Jennifer to fill her shoes and is happy to know that the organization is in capable hands. Jennifer immediately formed a new Board of Directors for the group, and requested Magnuson to continue with the group in a Past President role on the upcoming board.

In January, 2013, the Board  developed its first ongoing training and networking event: HR Professional Lunch & Learn series.  The creation of these monthly events was to reengage existing members and to excite new HR Professionals.  The purpose of these events is to get together on a monthly basis and increase  skills and knowledge.  Bringing in the top social media experts, top employment attorneys, and seasoned HR experts, SDHR members are receiving the best training San Diego has to offer in a fun and entertaining environment. In August 2013 SDHR launched a new Website to continue with the mission of using the  most current technology to connect San Diego’s HR Community.
