Why did you choose Human Resources as a career?

Funnily enough, even as an employment litigator, I didn't consider myself as a human resources professional. That didn't occur until 2008, when I shifted from practicing law to providing corporate education and training. The problem with being a litigator was that while I had a very good grasp of the legal issues surrounding harassment, I realized that I needed to step back and learn the nuts and bolts of the day-to-day life of employees and HR in the corporate world. I credit a number of friends who are HR professionals with providing me with insight and making me a more effective trainer.

What do you enjoy most about your current role at Shorago Training Services?

In my opinion, too few companies understand that Human Resources is one of the, if not the, functional area that has the largest potential to make the most impact on a company - not only on the company culture, but on the bottom line. I consider it part of my job to support my fellow HR professionals by educating their workforce and attempting to reduce the number of complaints those professionals need to deal with. That's one of the favorite things about what I do. I also think enjoy contributing to a positive culture and improving employees' competencies.

When did you join SDHR Roundtable?

I joined San Diego HR Roundtable in 2013. I've found it a valuable resource for learning and for networking. As important, I've met a lot of cool people and have gone to some very fun events - Stone Brewing, anyone?!

How do you use your SDHR Roundtable membership in your current role?

I've appreciated the opportunity to speak locally and deliver several fun presentations for the Roundtable, including harassment prevention, business writing and presentation skills, and wine for business professionals (I have an advanced certificate from WSET on wine).
