Why did you choose Human Resources as a career?

My major in college was Industrial and Labor Relations and part of my curriculum was in Human Resources.  I enjoyed taking the HR classes and thought it was a good and stable career during the recession.  I enjoy helping and interacting with people and solving problems, so it was a natural fit for me.   Human Resources is such a diverse field and I felt I could continually learn and grow.   After landing my first HR job, I realized how much I enjoyed it and knew that I wanted to continue in this line of work.

When did you join SDHR Roundtable?

I joined the San Diego HR Roundtable earlier this year as it was highly recommended to me by a past manager for networking, learning, and gaining knowledge from experts in the industry. As laws change, we have to stay at the forefront of developing new policies and procedures to ensure that the business is in compliance and we also need to present important information to our managers so they can continue to promote a great culture. Organizations such as SDHR assist with this through their round-tables and "lunch and learn" meetings.  It is also a great resource for my staff members, as they can stay current with trends.

What do you enjoy most about working in the HR Industry?

I thoroughly enjoy working in the HR industry.  No two days are ever the same and I feel like I grow on a daily basis.  Being able to drive strategy for organizations, help coach employees and provide training adds to a high level of job satisfaction.  There is so much variety in the field, I am never bored.  My favorite aspect of HR is recruiting as I am able to talk to new people and build relationships with them.  I also feel rewarded seeing people I’ve recruited promoted to new positions in the company.

What is the best piece of career advice you have received that you would like to share?

My parents always told me to enjoy what I do and at the same time, make sure your career is stable.  Through their encouragement, I found a career that I love in a field where there is always some type of demand for it.

What do you enjoy most about your current role?

I enjoy working for a company that cares about its employees and having a corporate office that is fully committed to the changing culture.  I appreciate the challenge of completely re-organizing the Human Resources Department and creating documents such as the Employee Handbook, job descriptions, IIPP, new hire paperwork and basic policies and procedures.  Working in a company with an accessible leadership team and a strong and dedicated Human Resources staff makes it easier to complete tasks and a great place to work.   It is rewarding to create training materials and see them in use at restaurants where our staff provides excellent customer service to guests.
