Why did you choose HR as a career?
After several years working in volunteer management, I was ready to move my career in a new direction. I have always had an interest in the field of Human Resources, and due to my previous experience managing, motivating and recruiting volunteer personnel, HR seemed like an ideal fit. To prepare myself for this career transition, I enrolled in the Human Resources Management Certificate Program at UC San Diego Extension. The program at UCSD offered an ideal blend of curriculum and practical application to build upon my previous work experience. This program provided me with a solid foundation within the HR field, and exposed me to further areas of interest in the HR profession. In the field of HR there are always new areas to explore within the profession. I love challenging work that offers a lot of variety with room to grow, and expand my knowledge base. I also enjoy networking with my peers, and meeting new contacts. I have found that professionals in the HR field love sharing information and industry trends. The constant evolvement within the HR field is especially interesting to me.

What do you enjoy most about your current role at your company?
I began working at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) four years ago as an HR Assistant. This position was a wonderful ground-floor opportunity to learn about field of Human Resources. This hands-on experience coupled with my HR Certificate allowed me to learn and grow professionally within the department. My current role as a Recruiter allows me to interact with all levels of management at TSRI across various departments, and gives me the opportunity to hone my HR skills. Working as a Recruiter at TSRI is a great fit for my outgoing personality, the passion I have for meeting new people. My position allows me to interact with all levels of personnel–working together to find the right match for their job vacancies. Being a recruiter offers me daily variety, interesting challenges, and an outlet for my creative side.

When did you join SDHR?
I have been a member of SDHR for almost three years. I joined when I was enrolled in the HR Management Certificate Program at UCSD. It’s a great way to network with other HR professionals and to expand my knowledge base within the industry. My program instructors at UCSD highly recommended the SDHR Roundtable. I found that I truly enjoy networking with my peers and attending the group events. There is always something new and different going on within the HR field.
